The Young Professionals of Northern Virginia (YPNOVA), a networking group of the Prince William County–Greater Manassas Chamber of Commerce organized specifically for professionals under the age of forty-one, will celebrate its first anniversary at its July mixer. The July mixer will be held on Wednesday, July 15th from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. at Red Robin Gourmet Burger – Innovation located at 9945 Sowder Village Square in Manassas.

This year the Greater Chamber is giving four $1,000 scholarships in each of three categories: Education, for students intending to pursue a career as an educator; Leadership, for students demonstrating leadership qualities and Science/Technology, for students intending to pursue a career in science, technology, engineering or math.

The Prince William County-Greater Manassas Chamber of Commerce seeks golfers for its annual Polar Bear Scramble Golf Outing scheduled for Wednesday, March 11th from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Evergreen Country Club, 15900 Berkeley Dr. in Haymarket. In the event of snow, the make-up date is Wednesday, March 25th. A portion of the proceeds from this event are used to fund the Chamber’s annual scholarship awards to area senior high school students.

The Prince William County-Greater Manassas Chamber of Commerce presented the final two Shelley Krasnow Community Service Awards to GFWC Dominion Woman’s Club in the category of Arts and Education and Project Mend-A-House, Inc. in the category of Health and Human Services. Both organizations received a plaque and a check for $1,000. Their names will also be engraved on a permanent plaque which hangs in the Chamber main office. The awards were presented by Todd W. Hewitt, Executive Vice President of Cardinal Bank, this year’s Shelley Krasnow Community Service Awards sponsor at the annual Community Showcase Luncheon held on Tuesday, February 24th at the Best Western Battlefield Inn in Manassas. The luncheon was sponsored by The Cancer Center at Lake Manassas and Touching Hearts at Home on behalf of Capital Hospice.

A panel of speakers was convened with help from the Flory Small Business Center, Inc. Panelists included Peter Farrell, who was recently elected to the Manassas Park City Council; Andrew Harrover, President of Matrix Computer Consulting and Vice-Mayor of the City of Manassas, and Jana Yeates, CEO of Employment Enterprises, Inc., and was moderated by Michael R. Vanderpool, President of Vanderpool, Frostick & Nishanian, P.C. They addressed the topic of “Keeping Your Business Healthy in a Toxic Economy,” sharing strategies that businesses can use to survive current economic turbulence.

The Prince William County—Greater Manassas Chamber of Commerce joins the Virginia Chamber of Commerce in its support for maintaining the Commonwealth of Virginia’s standing as a “Right to Work” state. As a Right to Work state, no employee can be denied the right to work based on membership or non-membership in any labor union or labor organization. Virginia’s status as a Right to Work state has served it well in its efforts to attract and retain business, the engine that has traditionally kept our economy strong.

Most of the more than 100 organizations exhibiting at Connections Etc 2007, the largest tradeshow in Prince William County, made good contacts or found the tradeshow helpful and would like to participate next year. Connections ETC is organized by the Prince William County-Greater Manassas Chamber of Commerce. This year’s tradeshow was held on Thursday, October 25th at the Freedom Aquatic & Fitness Center in Manassas.

FBI FIELD OFFICE TO OPEN IN NOVEMBER

The new FBI satellite field office under construction on 15 acres at Innovation@ Prince William Technology Business Park should be ready for occupancy by November 19th, according to Michael Morehart, Federal Bureau of Investigation Special Agent In-Charge of the Washington Field Office. Mr. Morehart was the guest speaker for the Prince William County—Greater Manassas Chamber of Commerce October Networking Luncheon held on Tuesday, October 23rd at the Best Western Battlefield Inn in Manassas. The Fall School Supply Drive organized by Denyse Carroll, K-12 Program Administrator for Micron Technology Virginia and Co-Chair of the Education Committee of the Prince William County–Greater Manassas Chamber of Commerce was an unqualified success. The drive which lasted only three weeks, netted enough in cash and school supplies to fully load 100 backpacks.

Greater Chamber Chair Rick Hendershot, Certified Public Accountant, President of Hendershot-Burkhardt-Reed, Certified Public Accountants and Campus Dean of Strayer University took the podium at the 16th Annual Not-For-Profit Summit on Friday, August 3rd at the Park West Lions Charities, Inc. to explain the special tax accounting procedures required by the government in order for a hypothetical nonprofit organization to fulfill its mission of “feeding the zebras.” The event was organized by the Community Relations Committee of the Prince William County—Greater Manassas Chamber of Commerce and was offered free to members. MANASSAS, VA—The Lieutenant Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia, Bill Bolling convened a town hall meeting today at noon at the Prince William Campus of George Mason University as part of his “100 Ideas for the Future of Virginia” initiative. The purpose of the initiative is to solicit ideas from citizens with the goals of developing a comprehensive plan to solve the challenges facing the state in the coming years.

For the second year in a row, Synergy One Federal Credit Union will sponsor the joint softball game between the Prince William County–Greater Manassas Chamber of Commerce and the Prince William Regional Chamber of Commerce scheduled to take place on Tuesday, August 14th. The Potomac Nationals will host the event at G. Richard Pfitzner Stadium located at 7 County Complex Court in Woodbridge. The softball game will begin at 4:00 p.m., followed by a “Power Networking” picnic from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. At 7:35, attendees are invited to enjoy the baseball game as the Potomac Nationals take on the Wilmington Blue Rocks.

MANASSAS, VA— In a video introduction to the Prince William County–GREATER Manassas Chamber of Commerce’s third annual Virtual Bus Tour, Dr. Stephen Fuller, Director of the Center for Regional Analysis at George Mason University predicted that within the next five years, Prince William County will continue to grow at a faster rate than the Northern Virginia region adding 58,000 new residences and 36,000 new jobs. According to Fuller, the growing population will require services resulting in a demand for 3.5 million square feet of new office space by 2012.

More than one hundred members, committees and projects were nominated in 12 different categories. The awards are meant to honor the outstanding contributions made by Chamber members to further the mission and goals of the Chamber and to improve the community at large. The finalists will be announced at the “Excellence in Business” Awards Luncheon scheduled for Tuesday, May 22rd from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Holiday Inn of Manassas, soon to become Four Points by Sheraton. Manassas, VA—The Prince William County–Greater Manassas Chamber of Commerce held its annual “Polar Bear Scramble” Golf Tournament at Evergreen Country Club located at 15900 Berkeley Drive in Haymarket on Wednesday, March 21, 2007 from 11:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Proceeds from this event are used to fund the Chamber’s scholarship fund. The nine scholarship winners will be honored at the Chamber’s annual Honor Roll Breakfast taking place in April.

Students must apply for the scholarships through their high school Scholarship Committee or Counseling Department. Each individual school must evaluate all applications based on the criteria and limit its submissions to a maximum of three candidates, one for each of three categories.
