DOMINION WOMAN’S CLUB
www.dominionwomansclub.org

Dominion Woman’s Club Membership hits 75 in July!!

At our June Meeting, we welcomed guests from the Dominion Sisterhood Juniorette Club and took time to recognize our membership and 1st year officers. Officers for the 2008-2009 term were installed.

“Scramble for Shelter,” a golf charity tournament, was held at DVCC on July 14th. The event was in support of the American Red Cross - Prince William Chapter Adopt-A-Shelter Program. Thanks to our generous sponsors (see our website for a listing) and 95 golfers, DWC was able to provide $8,000 to purchase a disaster shelter trailer stocked with shelter supplies, including 70 cots, 30 sleeping pads, 200 blankets, 100 comfort kits, a shelter management kit and a coffee urn. The trailer, which will reside in the county, will serve the residents of Prince William County in times of disaster.

Our next fundraiser is the 2nd annual “Red White and Blue Jean” dinner dance and silent auction, being held the evening of November 1st at Airlie Conference Center. Once again, the featured charity will be Fisher House, Walter Reed Army Medical Center. For information on donating a silent auction item or attending the event, contact Stephanie Sturges at 703 732 8539 or stephsturges@gmail.com. Also check out our website for up to date information.

Our departments continue to develop and implement programs in support of community needs. This issue, we feature the Conservation, Education and Home Life departments:

The Conservation Department’s featured charity is Friends of Homeless Animals, www.foha.org FOHA is a non-profit, no-kill shelter for homeless dogs and cats. They rely on donations and dedicated volunteers to continue their mission to save the lives of unwanted, abandoned, abused and neglected animals. DWC donated $1200 to upgrade the computer systems at FOHA. In addition, members have attended volunteer orientation and are serving as dog walkers for the many wonderful dogs waiting for permanent, loving homes. If dog walking isn't for you, there are many other volunteer opportunities at FOHA such as cat socialization, laundry, trail maintenance, retail work at the Treasure Hound in Middleburg, web stuff, paperwork, off site adoption events, grant writing... If you’re interested in becoming a volunteer or would like more information about their volunteer program, e-mail volunteer@foha.org and a volunteer will contact you.

The Education Department is launching a "Bag a Book" literacy program at Westgate Elementary School in Manassas. The program will provide reading support for approximately 100 3rd graders, many of whom are reading below grade level. We are planning to provide each 3rd grader with a tote bag containing one nonfiction book, a pencil, eraser, and composition book to be used to write a summary for each book he/she reads. We also plan to provide volunteers to work with these students. At this time, we are looking for donations of black composition books for the students' use. The education department also continues to support the Fauquier Family Shelter and Friends of the Fauquier Library where the ongoing donations of used books helps in that area. We continue to collect Box Tops for Education as well. If you’re interested in contributing or would like more information about our volunteer programs, please feel free to contact the department chair: Beth Glaser at bifteach@comcast.net.

The Home Life Department has created a very special program we call "Operation Smile Angels." It is dedicated toward getting proper dental care for children and adults in local domestic violence and emergency homeless shelters. Too often, they are not able to afford a visit to a dentist; their dental health goes by the wayside, potentially impacting their overall health. A number of caring dentists in Prince William and Fauquier Counties have already joined our “Operation Smile Angels” network and provided free or low cost dental care to a number of needy children in our community. We invite any area dentist and oral surgeon in either Prince William or Fauquier County to join “Operation Smile Angels”... and become one of our Smile Angels! If you would like more information about our programs, please contact the department chair: Lisa Hill at lisachills@gmail.com or 571-232-1173.

If you haven’t heard, we now have a new home to conduct our meetings. In July we began holding our monthly meetings at Dominion valley Country Club. We meet the 3rd Monday of the month, with social time from 6:30 - 7 PM, meeting from 7 9 PM.
We invite all women, 18 and older, to attend one of our meetings to “get acquainted” and see if you want to make Dominion Woman’s Club your club. For information, contact Nanette at 571-261-1670 or dominionwoman@comcast.net.]]>
